Two weeks ago, Munchkin’s glasses broke. The arm broke off. Fortunately he qualified for a new eye exam (and subsequently new glasses) on Tuesday the 4th, which was only four days after the break. I was able to get him an appointment on Wednesday the 5th, and by this past Tuesday, he could see again 🙂 .

We don’t get much snow where I live, so when it happens, it’s a big deal. Especially the amount of snow we’ve gotten the past two days. It’s crazy! We don’t have a TV, and I don’t spend that much time researching weather forecasts (this close to the coast, they’re usually wrong anyway), so the snow seemed to come out of nowhere. It started snowing around 10 yesterday morning, and it hasn’t stopped! The last time we got this much snow was in December of 2009. It’s better this time around, though, because we have the dry, powdery stuff. In ’09, it was a very wet snow, and we got around 12 inches, then it rained for a day, then it snowed again. So we had several inches of snow, a layer of ice a couple of inches thick, topped with more snow. You can imagine how awful that was! But this year, it’s just cold, not awful, so the kids have enjoyed playing in the winter wonderland they only see once every few years.
It was Small Fry’s first snow, so it’s been fun watching him watch out the window as the flakes fall from the sky, and this morning, we let him out in it for the first time (he and I had already gone to the store before it started yesterday, and I’m not much of a snow person, so I didn’t take him out yesterday). That’s the picture on the upper right. The lower right is Small Fry wearing Seahawk’s snow jacket. Too cute!

We surprised the kids with a picnic in the park last week. It was super fun! Don’t let the sunshiney look of the pictures fool you; it was crazy cold! But it’s important to get out and do something each day anyway. It’s good for the body and soul.

Seahawk and Munchkin have alternating chores. On even days, Seahawk empties the dishwasher and Munchkin takes out the compost; on odd days, they switch. (Neither minds emptying the dishwasher, but both hate taking out the compost. This way both chores get done but the kids don’t fight … as much.) Small Fry just likes to play near the open dishwasher. I mean, “help” empty it.

Small Fry got a big box of Mega Bloks for Christmas, and Seahawk was playing with him this morning. Fun!

Seahawk is on a basketball team. Our local parks & rec department provides team sports for all the kids in town (who want to play and pay the fee, of course) below high school. This is our first experience with it with our kids. I played basketball for two seasons about a million years ago – seriously, I wasn’t that much older when I played than Seahawk is now. Anyway, it’s been a very rewarding experience for the entire family. Seahawk is learning the essentials of the game as well as good teamwork. Both are good lessons for kids.
Last Saturday was his first game; that’s what the picture is from. There are only 7 kids on his team, so each one gets loads of playtime in the games.
Tomorrow he has official team pictures followed by Game Number 2. Do you have any fun weekend plans?

I was in the kids’ bathroom this week, and I noticed this Lego man doing a handstand on the shampoo caddy. I don’t know which kid did that to him (probably Seahawk), but I thought it was too funny not to snap a photo of.

Our town does a thing every Halloween where the downtown businesses offer trick-or-treating for the kids. This came about a few years ago when there was a lot of controversy over house-to-house trick-or-treating because of the “risk” associated with accepting candy/food from strangers. One of the insurance offices had someone in a full-on Iron Man costume around for pictures.
Seahawk went as Russell Wilson (of course!) and Munchkin was a ninja. I think we spent a sum total of $8 for their costumes – $4 at Goodwill for the football helmet (which is actually a softball helmet, but no matter) and $4 for the fabric to make the ninja mask. They just wore regular clothes otherwise.
